The (Progressive) Catholic Social Agenda

The Catholic Church’s most visible causes célèbres in America may be stopping abortions and invalidating marriage equality, which only serve to perpetuate the untrue notion that all American Catholics are politically conservative. But other (more politically progressive) pillars in the Catholic are equally, if not more important: achieving social justice through economic equality or ending the death penalty, for example.

Well, thank goodness for Pope Francis who, at the beginning of his pontificate, admonished Catholics to stop obsessing on a few popular causes and start focusing on the core values of being a Christian, like treating each other with kindness, forgiving those who have done us wrong, and helping the poor.

To add one more: yesterday, The Atlantic reported “Pope Francis’s Radical Environmentalism,” and I have to say it: I like this pope more and more.
