The Passing of John Siegenthaler

The nation has lost another of the heroes of the movement for equality and social justice. Among other courageous acts, John Siegenthaler went to Montgomery in 1961, on the request of then-attorney general Robert Kennedy, to protect the Freedom Riders. He was violently assaulted by the local mob just like they were. I got to meet John Siegenthaler about ten years ago at the Rosa Parks Museum in Montgomery.
