#throwbackthursday: WC Rice’s Victory Cross Garden
Though the man behind this frighteningly evangelical folk-art “garden,” WC Rice, has passed away, remnants of his work still stand in untended, dilapidated form. When we were teenagers in the 1990s, we used to defy our parents’ orders and sneak up to what we called The House of Crosses to gawk and marvel at its strangeness. Once, we even deigned to knock on his door to meet him and introduce ourselves. To our surprise, we were invited inside, and Rice was remarkably welcoming, albeit a little stern. As it turned out, our idea had not been so unique: he had a guest book for us to sign, and it was full of signatures from people who had done the same thing. This picture of one artifact there was taken more recently, in the early 2000s.
