A Deep Southern #throwbackthursday: The Most Progressive Place in America?
A year ago today, The Atlantic ran the article,“When the South was the Most Progressive Place in America,” which was in itself a “throwback” piece to the post-Civil War era when biracial cooperation almost took root in the South. The subtitle of the article reads: “Groundbreaking elections in the late 1860s gave birth to real, if short-lived, interracial democracy—the likes of which America had never seen.” Writers Blain Roberts and Ethan J. Kytle offer a perspective on a South that few of us can imagine today, with bitter Democrats pushing for white supremacy and outnumbered Republicans defending the rights of African Americans.
