ICYMI: NPR/StoryCorps on the 1961 Goldsboro Crash
Yesterday, while I was riding to work and listening to Morning Edition on NPR, the StoryCorps feature “8 Days, 2 H-Bombs, and 1 Team That Stopped a Catastrophe” came on, and by the end of it, I caught myself saying out loud in total dismay, “Holy shit . . .” I won’t ruin it for you, if you don’t know about this, but it has to do with a plane crash in rural North Carolina in 1961 that almost altered the landscape of North America. The story is less than four minutes long, and the unbelievably frightening scenario is all the more frightening because it’s real. (Keep in mind that this was the same year as the Freedom Rides and the Cuban Missile Crisis.)
